This subwoofer completes music and movie audio

I bought the Sony SA-WM250 subwoofer to augment my Sony STR-DE998 7.1 Channel Surround Sound Audio/Video Receiver and Bose speakers.
br /I had some trouble getting the 250 to work but the problems were in the receiver and the operator, not the subwoofer. If you use the 998, you have to both activate the subwoofer and use a sound mode that uses a subwoofer. Most of the huge number of the 998's sound modes will drive a subwoofer, but you can waste a vexing afternoon trying to get it working if perchance you are testing using one of the simple modes. In addition to the hard to follow mode descriptions in the manual, you can tell whether a sound mode uses a subwoofer just by selecting a mode and looking at the little active-speaker diagram on the display. You'll see an S in a box if the mode supports a subwoofer.
br /
br /I've not had a crossover-frequency control on my previous subwoofers. The 250's crossover control (one of two knobs, both on the subwoofer's back; the other is the volume control), adjusts the point at which the 250 starts subwoofing. You can have the subwoofer respond to the very lowest frequency sounds or all below whatever point you select. I found it unexpectedly useful.
br /
br /My 998 receiver has a subwoofer output but you should be able to use the 250 subwoofer on most sound sources by setting the crossover control to have it do its thing with just the lower frequency sounds.
br /
br /As to how well the SA-WM250 works: I am not an audiophile, but I was dissatisfied with the sounds from my five Bose speakers. Well, not at first, but voices from my videos and TV sounds were flat. The moment I had the 250 working, I knew it was just what was missing. I was even happier after I played with the crossover and volume controls.
br /
br /I was slow to add a subwoofer because I don't need plaster-cracking thumps to enjoy my audio. Nevertheless, our world does vibrate us with low frequency sounds and at least my body needed some of that to complete movie and music audio. On the other hand, the 250 has enough oomph to satisfy the most demanding rocker. If you need a subwoofer to untie your shoelaces, the 250 should meet your needs. If you think you might need even more subwoofing, you could buy the 250's big brother, the Sony SAWX700 250 Watt Active Subwoofer.
br /
br /Finally, something has to be said about the cost. I receive more for my dollar with the 250 than any other component of my home theater system.

I own a 500W Home Theater system with an included passive subwoofer. I wanted to upgrade my system and found this SONY active subwoofer in Radio Shack. I decided to buy it because it's a SONY, and for its affordable price and specifications.
And WOW what a sound difference after installing it.. An amazing bulky sound with a completely different music atmosphere specially when playing 5.1 channel DVD's.
The Speaker is nicely looking, video shielded, with a volume control, and a cut frequency control. There is a phase selection knob, a monoaural jack for connecting to a digital receiver (that's the one I use), and connections to the small satellite speakers of the system. Even the monoaural cable and the speaker's cables are included. What could I wish more?
I recommend this subwoofer for anyone seeking to upgrade his sound system with an affordable price and great specifications.

I have a high-end Sony A/V receiver as the foundation of my A/V system. I added this powered subwoofer to replace a passive unit from Cambridge Soundworks. The difference is stunning! The SONY adds bass information that goes unheard otherwise. On music, it creates a wonderful sense of fullness. On movies and DVDs, this is the missing link that takes you into the movie theatre. My next addition will be a pair of bass transducers to attach to the sofa and chairs.

After reading reviews on this sub stating that no auto on was its only downfall, I purchased a SA-WM500 and am very please with it. For early Christmas presents, I bought a couple of these SA-WM250 for my kids. They are young enough to bend over and press the button to turn it on. Unbelieveable speaker just as other reviewers have affirmed. Just out of curiosity, I plugged it into my voltage tester and found that with no input signal (TV off) the sub only showed 2 watts of power usage. That's 1/3 of what a night light uses. No wonder it has no auto on feature, it does not need it. Just turn it on and leave it on. I think Sony probably had that figured out. If you would like to have the full audio range out of you everyday television watching, just plug this sub into the back of the TV and you will be amazed at the difference. It will handle most normal home theater needs as well. This is one of those few products that you get much more than what you pay for.

I bought this sub to turn my 5.0 system into a 5.1.Since this is my first subwoofer I can't compare it to any other product. I can say it fills a void that my 2 fronts didn't.It doesn't shake walls or break glass and that is fine for my needs. If you have a small space and budget to match then this unit will do the job. One suggestion:replace the supplied 75ohm cable with a more expensive one. It makes a HUGE difference!

For my front speakers I have a pair of Infinity Reference towers, maybe 6 years old, each of which contains a 50-watt side-firing subwoofer. The speakers sound great for music and most movies, but those subwoofers aren't powerful enough for the really deep and loud effects on blow-'em-up DVDs: if I turn the subwoofers' gain high enough to shake the floor even a little, the protection circuits cause them to cut out on the loudest effects -- just when I need them the most. This appears to do no harm to the subwoofers, but it's disconcerting to say the least. So I knew I needed more (MORE BASS! MORE VOLUME!!), and this well-reviewed Sony seemed like just the ticket.
br /
br /And indeed it is: With the gain at 1/3, or maybe a little higher, and the rolloff set pretty deep, it adds exactly what I had been missing out of the Infinitys. For bang-bang movies I turn the gain down somewhat on the Infinity subwoofers so they don't cut out when things get real loud, turn up the overall gain out of the receiver (middle-of-the-line Yamaha), and it's pretty much movie-theatre time in my living room. (The signal goes to all three subwoofers from the single subwoofer output on the receiver, using two "Y" splitters connected together to provide a total of three outputs. It works just fine, though it looks silly.) When I first set up the new subwooder and was getting it adjusted, I used the DVD of "Independence Day" as my test, since it has plenty of very loud and very deep effects. It sounded so good that even my wife sat down to watch and listen, doing her usual clutch-my-arm trick at the most exciting parts. She was impressed by the sound, and she's not easy to impress. As a bonus, the new subwoofer also improves music. I tend to listen mostly to classical and bluegrass (a strange combination, but hey), and both sound considerably better now that the new subwoofer is in use.
br /
br /All in all, seventy-odd dollars VERY well spent -- and Amazon delivered the thing in maybe 3 days, of course in perfect condition, with free shipping and no tax. What could be bad?

Ordered it on Amazon on 6/2 and it arrived on 6/7. Another satisying transaction through Amazon...Anyway, I got the 27" Syntax LCD TV. This TV has subwoofer output that I just needed to make use of because the speakers it came with sucks. Made a huge difference in sound quality. I can't tell you why, not an expert, just know when it's good and when it's not. Unit is large, didn't expect it to be this big. I'll upload some picts.

I read the reviews, as I always do, here on Amazon and at epinions before buying this little subwoofer!
br /
br /I just could not ignore the value + performance in one package. And with free shipping from Amazon, why not?
br /
br /Took some tweaking right out of the box to get it just where I needed it! I was shocked to see how little I had to turn up the volume level to get a nice atmospheric feel to the sound. It took total 45 minutes out of box to get it where I need it. I do recommend plugging into the outlets of your receiver so you don't have to manually turn the subwoofer on and off!
br /
br /I don't have to have a big-time bump that vibrates the house. I was just looking for that extra bass feel to make the digital TV shows and movies pop!
br /
br /And it outright fits the bill without straining at all!
br /
br /Do yourself a favor - get this before Sony reads all these great reviews and starts charging more for this gem!

I recently upgraded my 5.1 THX home theater system by adding a replacement AV Receiver and this gem of a subwoofer.
br /
br / The Sony SA-WM250 Subwoofer replaces 2 Boston Accoustics passive subwoofers (huge, heavy mothers). The result is way beyond my expectations. When I listen to Music DVD concerts or watch DVD movies I now hear the bass channel as I never heard it with my other subwoofers (To be fair, I blame that partially on my old AV receiver and Amp, and partially on the passive subwoofers).
br /
br / This Subwoofer is about half the size of just one of my old subwoofers, and there is no setup required other than plugging it in, connecting a speaker cable from the AV receiver, and adjusting the bass control to suit yourself.
br /
br / I have to say that the addition of this little gem has made a very significent improvement in the sound of my home theater system for such a small investment of money.

To add a little extra to the bottom end of my garage stereo system, I bought this Sony sub to augment a Bose Acoustimass speaker system. The front side power switch adds a bit of flexibility as you can power it down easily if you really don't want or need the extra low end. For under $100 it's got to be one of the better sonic improvement bargains you'll ever find.

I wanted to try an active subwoofer with our TV/stereo surround system; I ordered this SA-WM250 because I've always liked Sony gear and it seemed like a bargain price ($75-ish, new from Amazon, July 2006.)
br /
br /My two significant findings: 1.) Even with 4 big bass-capable speakers for the surround, a subwoofer adds a LOT to the movie/music experience. It is an amazing improvement. 2.) This particular Sony adds the huge improvement at a bargain price. You really can't go wrong with it.

Honolulu is the city of very expensive housing, therefore apartments are small (for most people). I live in a 450 sq ft studio so how to get great sound without neighbors knocking on my walls? Picking very carefully! My orginal Home Theatre came with a passive subwoofer which just didn't deliver. I'd replaced the receiver with a 7.1 Pioneer so I have all digital sound and picture, but the bass sound was weak. Now for the oomph - checking reviews, the Sony 100w seemed the ticket (and the big plus - on sale with free Amazon shipping). It is perfect in my small place and now Star Wars sounds like the big theatres with THX! Amazon is a real plus in Hawaii as most places insist on using 2nd day shipping which often cost as must as the merchandise! Happy in paradise I am!

When you live in a condo, you have to limit the power of your speaker system. I got smaller speakers for my stereo and was missing the lower tones. (Even my Klispch Ipod player was producing much better bass.) Finally, I found this subwoofer. It is smaller than most I've seen, and it really reproduces the bass well. My music sounds great and my movies play great in DD 5.1. So far, I haven't gotten complaints from the neighbors. Two of its standard features are also helpful: you can decide where its cutoff frequency and at what volume it plays. Using my Klipsch IPOD player as a guide, I was able to set the subwoofer.

I didnt give this unit 5 stars, but it is very close. I have a six-year old SONY mini component home theater system that is about 175 watts spread out amongst the 5 speakers. I had been satisfied with this surround sound, including the bass, of this system but I had visited a friend (Hi, MD) who mentioned to me that his condo shook in the scene during Polar Express when the train first pulls onto the little boy's street. My system did throw out some pretty booming bass, but I thought, what the heck. I, an avid Reggae and House music listener, could always use some more bass.
br /
br /I checked this powered sub out, liking that it is also a SONY (no worries about combatibility and so forth). The reviews were scattered but for the price, I figured I couldn't go wrong. Admittedly, I have out grown my existing system because I moved into a new house with a very large family room (where my system is located) and my ceiling is two-stories in that room. Would the 100-watt be enough? It is only an 8-inch.....Again, for the price and since I will be upgrading my whole system in a couple of years or so, what the heck.
br /
br /My only gripe is that when I was researching this unit it was selling at Circuit City at $89. One week later when I was ready to purchase it went up to the price I paid for it which was $120 but I just couldn't wait.
br /
br /My husband set it up in a jiffy and I tested it out with Star Wars, Polar Express and Zathura (a really LOUD movie). When I first hooked it up I scared the life out of my sleeping dog! LOL!! This little black box ROCKED my house, booming and quaking, I was amazed. I cannot use it at its full power--it doesn't distort or make strange buzzing sounds as I have heard others say--it is just too loud. As far as my system is concerned, this unit throws out more bass with audio(absolutely SWEET!! I couldn't wipe the smile off my face) as compared to the video. AND this is without the monster cable I plan to buy. I was so pissed at having to pay retail that I said I would get the cable later on. I understand that would improve the output some more.
br /
br /If I had money to burn and could buy what I really wanted, I would most certainly have chosen a Velodyne, but on my budget, I am completely satisfied with my investment.
br /
br /In summary, you are not getting a $1000 sub for $100 bucks so don't think you are. But you are getting a darn good unit, the next best thing, for about a hundred bucks and that my friends, is what I call a deal!

I recently got this sub to add on to two satellite speakers, and the results are unbelievable. With the gain turned up to barely to 25%, everything already starts to rattle (and I have a bit of experience with bass: 200W 12" sub in my car). This 100W sub is very efficient with its well designed front port, and the amplifier is very clean. At high outputs (haven't actually put it to the max because #1 wearing it in + #2 afraid of ppl complaining...), the sound is not distorted at all. Very, very good deal being 100W RMS (not 100W max like many of the other advertised systems...Yamaha). From a very dependable company too, Sony. Couldn't be happier!!!

I'm a television and film chief engineer for audio in Burbank, CA. Forget about specs. The real test comes from your listening environment. This thing sounds great at any price! A nice responsive bass with adjustable gain, adjustable low frequency roll off and a rear phase switch. Most receivers let you flip the LFE (sub woofer) phase in some deep menu or you can flip the wires, but it's nice to have a switch for easy comparison. Dolby Digital has a characteristic phase shift in relation to the other speakers, switching phase can sometimes give surprisingly better and more powerful low-end. I highly recommend this sturdy little sub woofer.

I bought this relatively inexpensive subwoofer to add an a Panasonic DVD Changer bi-amplified mini system, and connect it to the variable subwoofer output on the mini system. It adds depth and volume that works well in my large family room. It sounds deeper and tighter than a lot of the inexpensive surround systems that I've heard. I think it sounds at least as good if not better than my neighbor's Bose 2.1 system at 2/3rds the price including the a more capable mini system and the subwoofer.
br /
br /There are simply two controls; volume and a crossover which lets you tune the system so it adds bass to where the mini system speakers lack. Initially I had to mess with the crossover and volume systems to give the system a "non-directional" quality so that I could not pin point where the bass was coming from. Once I worked that out, I was able to control the amount of bass from the mini system remote. I use this control to give the system more boom for movies and less bass for music.
br /
br /For the price, I couldn't be more pleased with the addition to the system, although at some point, I will probably more it to a bedroom and get a more advanced surround system. I used to have a very intricate full range speaker system with expensive components, but the quality of mini system has improved so much that adding this subwoofer makes it hard to tell the difference.

A low price subwoofer that meets all of my sound requirements. As much extra bass as I need while not overly large in size. Easy hookup.made this a good choice.

I have a McIntosh 2100 (circa 1972) and a C26 McIntosh pre-amp and I play a lot of vinyl folk-rock and country rock. The C26 pre-amp has an adjustable center channel output that works perfect with the SA-WM250 to give rich extra bass to my speaker system without overkill in terms of the kind of music I enjoy. Several young sales people in modern places like Fry's and Best Buy told me using a center channel for a sub-woofer would not work because the center channel was dedicated to mid-range, but they were thinking in terms of modern surround systems and digital receivers. As some audiophiles have discovered, older, over-produced systems like the McIntosh prior to the 1980's and vinyl have a distintive richness of sound. My Sony Subwoofer works perfect with it.

This has all the controls you need, and produces a huge bass sound with no distortion. It's big, but then again, your subwoofer doesn't need to be small and unobtrusive. You can get this unit for a small to medium sized room. Don't pay a lot more money for some other more fancy one!

I am very pleased with this subwoofer. Bravo to Sony for creating so reliable active piece of a larger home theater, which does not interfere with the TV or overpowers the sound from the smaller speakers. The price is right and the design is also excellent. This is really the best you may buy.

Great sound..and a great deal

For the past several years I have had my Bose cube speakers hooked up to my Sony system. The cubes have used a passive subwoofer. It seemed to work fine, but in putting together my new theater I decided to get an active subwoofer. I have now learned what I have been missing. This really fills out the sound in the room and provides a nice, but not overpowering thump to movies. I have it in a pretty narrow room, so I didn't want anything that would be overwhelming in a smaller space. This is a great option, and very good deal for the price.

Five stars for the quality

I have just upgraded my passive sub with this powered sub and Wow!!! I got the real bass sound that I have never gotten. This is a great deal that I got so far. It is a little big, but look nice and matched well with my 5.1 home theater system. For $100 this sub is hard to compete! Highly recommended!

The Sony SA-WM250 100-Watt Active Subwoofer is awesome, and reasonably priced. Now my home theatre system is complete and it sounds absolutely great. All the kids come over now to watch movies, eat popcorn, candy and hotdogs. They love the new sound from the subwoofer. It really sounds like you are in a huge movie theatre. I definitely recommend this subwoofer.

I was very impressed with this sub! It is a powerful sub for the price. It will give you everything you need (unless you have a giant room to rock). The sub has a crossover control which is important and not found on a lot of subs

This guy is a marvel, like a big stalwart friend, always there boosting the richness of the sound.
br /Don't know how I ever got along without him.
br /Yes, this sub-woofer is a male, and probably Russian.
br /Maybe named Boris, good and loyal.

Bought a Sherwood home theater tuner/amp to take advantage of all those unused speakers in the basement bought over a 20 year period. Hooked up five speakers and had a great sound. Bought this damaged box special at Radio Shack warehouse outlet and then watched Starwars 4, 5 & 6 again. What an amazing differance. It doubled the intensity of the surround sound experience.
