As a union journey man plumber I am always looking for the best product to increase my productivity. THis is the best Drill I have ever owned. Lightweight, Long Lasting and the Quality of being manufactured in Japan, not China like alot of its competitors. The battery technology and warranty are what really sold me. Having batteries go bad from overcharging or heat, the SoCal summers, is a big problem down here. THey have a warranty on the batteries for like 2000 charges. That is like 3 years, incredible. Also a problem is theft of tools and with the Panasonic I am the only person on the job with the tools so there is no confusion or misplacing of my tools. The only drawback is that Panasonic doesnt offer a full line of battery compatible cordless saws and lights yet. AS for this deal specifically where else can you get a top of the line Drill with 50$ in rebates. I paid the same for an 18v what most are paying for a 14.4v and mine is full of high technology. I completely reccomend this drill the the serious professional.

If you're looking for a great cordless drill, look no further! I've owned 18 volt DeWalt and Makita cordless drills before, and the Panasonic blows them both out of the water. The torque is awesome, and even more importantly, the runtime is by far the best I have ever seen! This Panasonic comes with 3.5 amp-hour batteries, with the competition just now offering 2.4-2.6 amp-hour batteries (with their base batteries less, often 2.0 or 2.2 amp-hour). On the job, I can go for a couple of days on one battery, whereas the other guys I work with have to change their battery several times per day. Also, the ergonimics are very nice, the balance is awesome. It is definitely more comfortable to use than the "other brands" that I have used. If you are truly looking for a star performer, look no further - power, runtime, ergonomics, case - this is the best cordless drill/driver that I have ever used!!!

This thing is an absolute STEAL!

I recently purchased this tool, and I must say that it was the best money I ever spent on a single tool. Why should you buy this tool? Keep reading.

1) The NiMH battery is outstanding. It lays waste to any cordless drill battery out there. The only thing that even gets close is the Hilti TE-2A drill. Even then, this battery has 17% more amp hours than the TE-2A's NiMH.
2) Not only do you get that wonderful NiMH battery, but you also get a second one included in the package!
3) Two awesome batteries not enough? Through March 31, 2005 Panasonic will send you a 3rd NiMH battery for free through a mail in rebate.
4) Though the description doesn't seem to mention it, the drill comes in a fairly nice plastic case that includes your two batteries, the drill and the charger.
5) Powerful! It has devoured whatever I throw at it without complaining. This thing is a wolf, and it will take your arm off if you're not careful. The clutch is your friend. Use it!
6) Generally low maintenance. There is some plastic, but it's not the cheesy stuff. It's actually pretty solid and doesn't seem to get as scuffed up as some of my other tools.

I could go on and repeat what's already been said. But suffice it to say the only thing you're going to regret is that Panasonic doesn't make a whole lot more types of tools.

To be fair...I will mention some things that need improvement. Nothing is perfect after all.

1) Made in Mexico. Maybe it's better than China...but not by much. It seems pretty solid, but I wouldn't bet on it being around when I pass my tools onto my kid. Time will tell.
2) Heavyweight! When you put the battery on this guy it can be a load. I don't have a problem with this, but I'm not a small man either. Be forewarned that if you're not in good shape or you're slight of frame, this thing is going to wear you out.
3) Perhaps my only REAL complaint: The side handle flat-out sucks! If anything wears out on this drill, my money says it's going to be the flimsy tension strap that attaches the handle to the drill. I think this was Panasonic's idea of a joke.

I still can't believe I got all of this for under $300. Heck, the batteries are worth that! This is a STEAL!

This is the 18-volt drill to buy, in my opinion...

I have owned mostly DeWalt cordless tools for the past several years, including their 18v Hammer Drill/Driver. I bought this Panasonic on the recommendation of a good friend about six months ago --- I will never go back.

High Points:

- Excellent Run Time (the batteries are really amazing)
- Great Torque
- Comfortable grip
- Solid chuck that is easy to tighten sufficiently

Low Point:

- Panasonic needs to expand the line to include a solid jigsaw (can they please work with Bosch on this one...), a slick flashlight with an infinitely adjustable head angle, a circular saw, etc. so that I can relieve myself of all my yellow cordless tools...

I really believe that if you give this one a shot, you will not be sorry... except for when your friends' borrow it and will not give it back.

Enjoy!

I am not an expert in the matters of handtools. In fact, I am not even a heavy user - perhaps a couple of times a month. But this I know, I like this cordless Panasonic drill better than my Dewalt corded one. For one, this frees me of the hassle of the cord, and, surprisingly, it seems to have more power. Unlike my corded Dewalt, I do not have to pull the trigger as hard to get the power I need. And it is light enought not to strain any muscles. As a bonus, it comes with a sturdy case, a 65-minute charger, and two batteries. (...). Mind you these 18V batteries are not cheap - in eBay it costs almost a hundred if not more. This is definitely a good buy.

I use this drill almost every day for carpentry work, from fine to rough, including use on wood, metal and plastic. It has ample torque, even with large bits. This drill has almost entirely replaced my large two-handed 1/2" corded drill. It has excellent speed control and torque at both low and high speeds.

The drill is a bit heavy due to the large battery size, but the batteries go an amazingly long time before needing a recharge. The plastic case is useful, but it is quite large and bulky. The ergonomics are excellent, although I do tend to occaisonally bump the forward/reverse switch into neutral from time to time.

Don't bother with other drills. I have tried them all(Dewalt, Makita, Hitachi, Craftsman, Ridgid, and Bosch). I have had my 18v hammer drill for over 1 1/2 yrs and my batteries are still as good as the day I bought them and I use it EVERYDAY!
One day I showed my electrican how good it was by using a 2" self-feed bit through a bottom plate and subfloor in one of my houses i'm building. He told me there was no way a cordless could do that. (NOTE: you have to do this in LOW RANGE as i did)
After showing him this his crew now has five panasonic drills with 15.6 and 18vs. I aslo have a 15.6v drill and it is a better drill than other brands that are 18v. These drills are second to NONE.

Excellent Drill

I have been searching for a drill to replace my aging 12 volt Dewalt, a drill I had been fairly happy with. I looked at the new 18 volt Dewalts, and was not that impressed, their quality has seemed to decline. I really liked the Milwaukee, but it was too heavy and cumbersome for the projects I work on. Luckily a friend has a 15.6 volt Panasonic. I was very impressed. The 15.6 volt was more powerful than another friends 18 volt Ridgid. Then the 18 volt Panasonic has to comparable to the 19.2 and 24 volt other brands right? So along those lines I purchased the EY6450. (At first I wanted a Metabo Lithium Ion 18 volt drill, but the high price and no local sales/service center and lackluster reviews turned me away.) This drill is awesome. I put it on the scale. Only 5 ounces heavier than my 12 volt Dewalt. This drill is very powerful, be careful sinking screws into furniture. Battery life has been excellent, usually lasting 3 nights in the workshop before needing a recharge.

The chuck took a little getting used to, with the weird ratcheting noise, but it seems to grip small bits well. The chuck holds drill bits much better than the Jacobs on my Dewalt. This drill is the best cordless drill I have used. Period. While my use is not Industry/Construction, I use it daily. A note on battery price. The last time I purchased batteries for my 12 volt Dewalt (2 years ago) they cost $88 a piece. For NiCad's. The Panasonic NIMH batteries are $110. A much better value in my opinion. Highest possible recomendation.

An excellent cordless drill.

This drill throws a powerful punch for being such a small and light drill. I tried several other 18 volt drills and because of their weight and size they were awkward and difficult to use over an extended time period.

Wouldn't have expected it

This drill puts all others to shame. I have worked with them all over the last 27 years and feel comfortable saying that so far this is the best. It was recommended by a fellow cabinetmaker that had been through the same battery and inconsistent wows. I found his recommendation hard to believe but he was very adamant about it, and now I know why.

This is THE cordless drill!!!

I've owned DeWalt 9.6V - a nice way to start, an Hitachi 14.4V - a better way to continue and now the only way to finish, a Panasonic 18V. Check out the specs of the likes of Metabo, Makita, Ramset, AEG, Hitachi, DeWalt etc and you'll find the highest battery rating is 2.5AH. This little beauty, and its equally impressive young brother the 15.6V, use nothing less than 3.5AH batteries - that's one hell of a lot more grunt to do REAL work. Apart from this it is a beautiful piece of equipment - maybe a bit heavy (but it is 18V) but beautifully balanced.

SOMETIME OVER 15 YEARS BACK, I REALIZED THAT THE MOST USEFUL TOOL I OWNED WAS THE ONE I USED THE MOST - THAT SCREWS HAD REPLACED NAILS IN MUCH OF MY REMODELING WORK AND THAT MY CORDLESS DRILL WAS THE MOST VERSITILE AND IMPORTANT TOOL I HAD ON THE JOB. OVER 20 + YEARS, I'VE HAD BOSCHES, MAKITAS AND DEWALTS. NONE OF THEM WAS AS STRONG OR WELL MADE AS THE PANASONIC. BATTERY LIFE WAS NO COMPARISON TO ANY OF THE OTHER BRANDS- THE PANASONIC WOULD RUN WELL OVER A HALF HOUR AFTER OTHER SUBS HAD THEIR BATTERIES STUCK IN CHARGERS WAITING LIKE SALLY STROTHERS IN FRONT OF THE MICROWAVE (HURRY UP, HURRY UP!} I KNOW THERE HAVE BEEN IMPROVEMENTS IN BATTERY LIFE AS WELL AS CORDLESS CONSTUCTION BY OTHER MANUFACTURERS, BUT TO ME THEY'RE PLAYING CATCH UP TO A PANASONIC DESIGN WHICH CONTINUES TO IMPROVE. I OWN TWO 15.6 VOLT AND ONE 18 VOLT DRILL ALL STILL RUNNING AFTER YEARS OF DAILY USE. ONE IS CLOSE TO 10 YEARS OLD AND I HAVE YET TO BUY A BATTERY OUTSIDE OF THE 2 THAT CAME WITH IT. THERE IS NO BETTER CORDLESS ON THE MARKET. I LOVE THE 18 VOLT I OWN BUT I PLAN TO PICK UP THE 19.2 BECAUSE I KNOW THE CHARGER WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH MY OTHER BATTERIES, I KNOW THE DRILL WILL BE SOLID, POWERFUL AND WELL MADE. I ALSO KNOW I'LL LOVE IT BUT DON'T TELL MY 18 VOLT.

I love this drill and would recommend it to tradesmen and homeowners alike. This a powerful, well engineered, and refined drill. I also own a Milwaukee 28 volt drill and would recommend it as well for more demanding jobs. The panasonic is made of high quality components and the batteries are some of the best I have ever used. You get a lot of work from these batteries. I don't understand why Panasonic doesn't market their tools more than they do. They are clearly some of the best cordless tools on the market today.
Don't hesitate to buy this drill. You won't regret it.

Batteries seem to last forever. I have used it to drill a 3/4" with an 18" bit through nail embedded 4"x12" and the two top plates and it just keeps on pulling, never lagged. You need to set it for drill and use low speed setting. It charges my 12v Panasonic battery also so one charger is great.
